Ranger Motel RANGER MOTEL...               If you think you’re hearing more and more about a musical phenomenon known as Red Dirt, you’re right. And now, along comes a disc that stands as the ultimate example of that earthy, Oklahoma-bred, genre-twisting style. It’s Ranger Motel from the Red Dirt Rangers, a hugely influential group that’s been carrying the Red Dirt torch for almost two decades. Ask white-hot Red Dirt acts like Cross Canadian Ragweed and Jason Boland and the Stragglers about the Rangers – or, better yet, give a listen to the 14 tracks on Ranger Motel.
Ranging from tough, lyrical ballads like “Always Come Back” and “Stillwater” to rural rockers like “Red Dirt Roads” and “Under the Radar,” Ranger Motel brings forth all the best qualities of Red Dirt music, wedding the joyous exuberance of back-porch picking to solid, emotional lyrics, blending in influences from Tex-Mex to Woody Guthrie. Along for the ride is rock ‘n’ roll and Tejano legend Augie Meyers, whose keyboard work on Ranger Motel often recalls his days with the Sir Douglas Quintet and Texas Tornados, while still sounding as fresh as ever.  Two other major rock ‘n’ roll veterans, drummer Jim Karstein (Gary Lewis and the Playboys, JJ Cale) and blues-harpist extraordinaire Jimmy Markham also make knowing contributions, as does Steve Ripley, head of the multiplatinum-selling alt-country act the Tractors, who engineered and produced the disc (with the Rangers) in Leon Russell’s former Tulsa studio.
“Soul Satisfaction,” “Stillwater,” and “Spice & Sugar” are especially recommended for airplay on Americana stations, “Red Dirt Roads,” “Laveña,” and “Psychedelic Cowboy” (a tribute to Texas legend Doug Sahm) for Texas Music outlets.
The Red Dirt Rangers respectfully invite you to spend some time as their guests at the Ranger Motel. There’s no checkout time. In fact, the longer you stay, the better they’ll like it!
